‘Molly’ is a useful shop name, but it is not one exact species label. FishBase lists Poecilia sphenops as Molly, Poecilia latipinna as Sailfin molly, and Poecilia mexicana as Shortfin molly. OATA also distinguishes smaller mollies from larger sailfin types in trade. Ask for the scientific name, or at least a reliable identification, before treating a care sheet as specific to your fish.

Sailfin species
Sailfin molly is used for named species including Poecilia latipinna and P. velifera. The larger sailfin forms need a different adult-space assessment from smaller mollies. Advice for one named species should not automatically be applied to every fish sold simply as “molly”.

Questions to settle at the shop
Ask for the scientific name and the origin of the stock, but allow for an honest identification limit. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service records Poecilia sphenops and its hybrids in the aquarium trade and notes taxonomic confusion. A seller may be unable to establish a pure species for hybrid stock.
In that case, record what is known and what is uncertain. Ask for a setup plan for that particular stock, including adult-size expectations and prior housing, rather than forcing an exact species label. Compare the answers with the space and equipment you can maintain.

Build a maintainable setup
Prepare a filtered aquarium before adding fish. “Cycled” means the biological filter is established so its bacteria can process fish waste. Clear-looking water is not a substitute for water testing.
Mollies are livebearers. Ask about previous mixed-sex housing as well as the intended group, and make a plan for possible young.
- Write down the seller’s identification, including any hybrid uncertainty.
- Record the group and adult-space assumptions used to choose the aquarium.
- Keep test results and equipment checks in one dated log.
- Make sure a temporary caregiver can find the supplies and follow the routine.

Use the name to choose the next guide
Use the information available for the actual stock to review the aquarium plan with an experienced aquatic retailer. If identity remains uncertain, keep that uncertainty in your notes and avoid copying precise care rules from a different named species.
